The Yorkshire Terrier (known as a "Yorkie") is an
energetic little dog first bred in England to kill rats and other varmints.
Today, the Yorkie is one of the most popular toy breeds. They are
intelligent, loving and courageous; And in the same respect, the ultimate
“Lap Dog”. The Yorkie is the perfect pet for various living situations. From
families with children to Senior Citizens, large homes or small apartments,
the Yorkie can adapt easily.
Yorkies have a single coat much like human hair. They
do not shed and are good in homes with allergy sufferers. If kept long, the
coat requires daily brushing. However, many owners prefer to keep the Yorkie
in a puppy cut.
The Yorkie’s teeth also need some attention. Daily
brushing is recommended.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is a condition Yorkie
owners should be aware of. These are small dogs with lots of energy. Taking
the proper precautions will ensure a healthy dog. New owners should discuss
this with his/her veterinarian.
Finally, a new Yorkie owner should know they have just
acquired a diligent watch dog and a loving and loyal friend.
